The She County ancient city, built during the Ming Dynasty, is divided into an inner city and an outer rampart, with four gates to the east, west, south, and north. Among them, the two watchtowers on the western gate rampart are still perfectly preserved to this day. Since the Tang and Song dynasties, She County has built more than 400 memorial archways, of which 104 are still well-preserved, a rarity in China.

What to See in Huizhou Ancient City

Xu Guo’s Former Residence

Located to the south of Xu Guo Stone Archway, this site in Huizhou Ancient City of Huangshan is part of the former residence of Grand Secretary Xu Guo. The residence is a large architectural complex, featuring stone lions and archways outside the gate, and consisting of a main hall, garden, and library inside.

East Watchtower

The East Watchtower, also known as Yanghe Gate, is located to the west of Xu Guo Stone Archway in Huizhou Ancient City. It was originally built in the 20th year of the Shaoxing era during the Southern Song Dynasty (1150).

The construction of the tower was motivated by a feng shui concept. In the past, the city frequently suffered from fires. In the second year of the Shaoxing era, a massive fire destroyed more than half of the prefectural city, even reducing the prefectural office to ashes. Feng shui masters attributed the cause to the incorrect orientation of the office. As a result, the original main gate, the South Watchtower, was sealed off, and this East Watchtower was built. The time-keeping devices from the South Watchtower were also moved to the East Watchtower.

Approximately 500 meters long, the street is lined with large residences of Huizhou merchants and officials from the Qing Dynasty. The street extends from north to south, with houses facing south.
