Renowned as “Oriental Venice”, Zhujiajiao is the nearest waterside town to Shanghai with a history of over 1700 years.
It is ideal for a day trip to glimpse into the antique aspect of Shanghai. Here you can expect all that a real ancient town can offer, like old lanes and streets, antique architectures, tranquil canals, quintessential bridges, relaxing in the rowing boat, hoary Qing Dynasty temples, and some exquisite bars and cafes.
Day-by-day Itinerary
- Day 1: One Day Zhujiajiao Water Town from ShanghaiZhuxi Garden, Zhujiajiao Museum of Humanities and Arts, North Street, Caohe Street, Fangsheng Bridge & Kezhi Garden
Meet up with your English-speaking guide at People’s Square of Shanghai at 8:30 am. Then a comfortable vehicle will transfer you to Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, a small waterside town boasting a history of over 1700 years.
Zhuxi Garden and Zhujiajiao Museum of Humanities and Arts will come into your eyes after entering the town from the south entrance. Zhuxi Garden is an exquisite ancient garden free to the public, while the museum is a unique modern white building with its inside decorated with oil paintings and statues showcasing local history and culture.
Zhujiajiao Water Town Stroll along the time-honored North Street filled with hustles and bustles, you will meet numerous local delicacy and snack stores. Grandma's Handmade Rice Dumplings, Ancient town sweet dumplings, Braised pig feet and more delicate Dim Sums can all be found here.
Keep walking north and enjoy leisure time along the canal, you will meet several bridges with different styles and designs. Wandering along Caohe Street across the canal, you will visit many classic architectures of Ming and Qing Dynasty (1368 AD - 1911 AD) styles, include Qing Dynasty Post Office, Wang Chang Memorial Hall, City God Temple, Yuanjin Buddhist Temple, etc. There are also many shops which breathe life into the street.
You will not miss the Fangsheng Bridge, the landmark of Zhujiajiao which is the longest, tallest and largest bridge among all the bridges in the ancient town. It’s easy to take some great pictures on the bridge.
Also located in the ancient town is Kezhi Garden, an exquisite and quiet garden reflecting the essence of Jiangnan gardens.
After the tour, you will be driven back to Shanghai.
