Xihai Grassland is known for its breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, and the view of the snow-capped mountains from here is particularly striking, adding to the area’s natural beauty.

Legends of Sayram Lake

According to a famous story in the Record of Waterways in the West. At that time, the guards of the Sayram Lake saw a huge green sheep with green horns sticking out of the water of the Sayram Lake when it was dark. Upon the appearance of this monster, the dark sky began to rain heavily, waves began to roll in the lake, fog filled the sky, horses began to hiss uncontrollably, and many residents were soaked to the skin since they were unable to flee in time.

In the early years of the Qing Dynasty, the officials and citizens of the Sayram Lake built a magnificent Jingwang Pavilion on the lake and a very beautiful Dragon King Temple on the island in the center of the lake to worship the river god for blessings. From then on, the winds and rains were favorable, and people lived and worked in peace and happiness.

In the early years of the Republic of China, both Jinghai Temple and Longwang Temple were destroyed in the war. The temples and pavilions on the island in the center of the lake today were built in recent years. It is said that since 1982, many people have seen a huge horned beast surging in the lake. But what exactly is the “lake monster”, is still an unsolved mystery.
