Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge
The Upper Tiger Jump is the narrowest section of the entire canyon, with a width of only 20 meters (66 feet). In the centre of the river, there is a huge stone, about 13 meters (43 feet) high. Legend has it that a tiger jumped to the other side of the river with this boulder, which split the rapids into two, hence the name of Tiger Leaping Gorge. For most tourists, this is the best viewing platform.
Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge
In the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge section, the reef was leaping, and the Jinsha River fell by more than 100 meters (328 feet) in less than 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). Like a green dragon that seized the pass and split the pass, it rampaged, while the waves lap the shore and the turbid waves reach the sky, forming 18 rapids.
Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge

Best time to visit
The best time to hike Tiger Leaping Gorge are spring and autumn, especially from April to June and September to October. The climate is favourable and the temperature is moderate. Furthermore, there is more possible that you can take in a beautiful view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Avoid hiking to Tiger Leaping Gorge during the rainy season in summer, as you may encounter the risk of mudslides and landslides.
The temperatures are very low in winter with snowfalls in December, January, and February, making it unsuitable for hiking. But you can still have a visit for sightseeing.

From Lijiang
The nearest airport to Tiger Leaping Gorge is Lijiang Sanyi International Airport. Fly to Lijiang Airport from other cities in China, including Kunming, Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. Alternatively, you can take a bullet train from Kunming or Dali to Lijiang.
From Lijing, you can take a regular bus or arrange for a private transfer to Qiaotou or Tiger Leaping Gorge ticket office. The road trip takes about 2 hours.
From Shangri-La
By bus: You can take a shuttle bus to Tiger Leaping Gorge from Shangri-La Bus Terminal. The journey takes about 2 hours.
By through train: Buy Tiger Leaping Gorge Scenic Area through train tickets at Shangri-La Railway Station or Diqing Tourism Distribution Service Centre located in Dukezong Ancient City. It is a also convenient way to get to Tiger Leaping Gorge from Shangri-La.
