How Was Wulingyuan Formed?

Quartz Sandstone Peak Forest Landform

The 3103 stone peaks that make up Wulingyuan are spread out in an elevation range of 500–1100 meters, from tens of meters to 400 meters. The rock layer is 520 meters thick and contains 75% to 95% quartz. Natural sculpture is facilitated by the interlayer structure, which is made up of solid quartz sandstone with a thin layer and very thin mica siltstone or shale. The synclinal profile’s softly occurring strata (5°-8 °, local maximum 20°) improve rock stability and offer the conditions for the peak forest’s ascent.

In order to shape the topography of different peaks, forests, and deep canyons, the vertical joints of the rock strata are produced and exhibit the features of isometric spacing, which is typically greater than 15 to 20 meters.
